GI Surgery
Liver Resections
Dr Nikam has successfully resected laparoscopic removal of left lobe liver ruptured hemangioma. One of its own kind presented in SAGES Conference, Baltimore, USA.
Surgically removing the part / segments of liver is called Liver resection. This complex open surgery is done in case of liver cancer, in certain cases of metastatic colorectal cancers, Gallbladder cancers & certain benign tumors of the Liver and Hemangioma.
Liver resection is done by removing the cancerous part of liver and therefore the GI Surgeon aims to stop spreading it further. The Surgeon attempts to remove all the cancerous part/ segments of liver and this procedure helps patient survival once the cancerous part of liver is removed.
Esophagectomy (Cancer of the Esophagus) (VATS)
Dr Narendra Nikam has done many successfully minimally invasive esophagectomy to remove food pipe and then passage is rebuilt from part of your stomach or part of your large intestine.
Based on the stage of tumor, esophagectomy is decided & how much of the esophagus is to be removed.
A feeding jejunostomy is always combined with esophagectomy to start feeding the patient early and therefore an early discharge from the Hospital.
Laparoscopic Surgery for Gastric Cancer
Laparoscopic Surgery for Gastric Cancer is a minimal invasive surgical procedure in which the surgeon removes the tumor in the stomach, through the use of a laparoscope and surgical instruments. The surgery is conducted by an expert laparoscopic surgeon.
The procedure is conducted to:
-
Remove cancerous part of the stomach.
-
If the cancer cells have spread throughout stomach, the whole stomach is removed.
-
To lymph nodes near the stomach which have been affected by cancer cells.
Advantages of laparoscopic gastrectomy:
-
Smaller incisions are required for the surgery.
-
Reduced post operative pain
-
Reduced recovery time.
-
Shorter hospital stays.
-
Less complications.
Laparoscopic Assisted Distal Gastrectomy (LADG): This procedure is used to remove advance cancerous cells. Apart from removing the cancer cells in the stomach and nearby lymph nodes, it is also used to remove lymph nodes or tumors located at the branches of the celiac arteries
Laparoscopic Surgery for Colon and Rectal Malignancy

The minimal invasive surgical procedure used to remove rectal malignancy in the rectum and its surrounding areas through use of a laparoscope is known as laparoscopic surgery for rectal malignancy. The surgery is conducted by an expert Surgeon.
The procedures are conducted to:
-
Remove cancerous part of the colon and rectal area.
-
To lymph nodes near the colon and rectal area which have been affected by cancer cells.
Why is Laparoscopic Surgery for Colon and Rectal Malignancy is required?
The treatment of Gastric cancer through laparoscopic techniques is highly preferred by medical experts or the following reasons:
-
Incisions for surgery are smaller as compared to open surgery.
-
Lesser pain after the surgery
-
Recovery is fast and takes lesser time
-
Shorter period of hospitalization.
-
Lesser complications.
-
Lesser time required for the bowel movements to return to normal.
Types of Laparoscopic Surgery for Colon and Rectal Malignancy Techniques
Laparoscopic techniques used for Colon cancer:
Hand assisted laparoscopic surgery: This procedure allows placement of a hand in the abdomen through devices to conduct the surgery, which helps in performing manual dissections and retractions. The whole procedure is monitored through a laparoscope.
Laparoscopic techniques used for Rectal Cancer or Malignancy:
Hybrid and hand assisted laparoscopic rectal surgery: Here also a laparoscope is used to monitor the surgery. A small incision is created at the low midline, to treat the affected area through small surgical instruments.
